GroupWise ClientsGroupWise offers a choice of Windows, WebAccess, and Cross-platform clients to suit you needs, as well as offering IMAP access for basic mail functionality with the client of your choice. Computing and Network Services recommends and supports the GroupWise Windows client for use on Drew standard computers and WebAccess for use at home and on the road. Fully supported and recommended GroupWise Clients:
Alternatives:
Full-featured GroupWise Windows Client
The GroupWise Windows client provides access to all GroupWise functionality and is the recommended choice on your Drew standard desktop or notebook PC. The GroupWise 7 Client is supported with Windows 2000 and XP only. Installing the GroupWise Client on your Drew standard notebook or desktop PC from on-campus using the Application Explorer:
Installing the GroupWise Client on a non-standard PC or for use at home:
What about Windows 98 machines? The GroupWise 7 Client does not support Windows 98. Where can I get more information about using the GroupWise Client? GroupWise WebAccess
GroupWise WebAccess is the preferred solution for off-campus use and access to GroupWise from non-Drew computers. Many of the features you expect from a full-featured Windows client such as drag-and-drop and spell checking are available in the WebAccess client. WebAccess is fully supported in all major browsers, including Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox. You may access GroupWise WebAccess by going to webmail.drew.edu. Please see the ITS online documentation page for information on how to use WebAccess. See Novell's documentation for a comparison of Windows Client and WebAccess features. GroupWise Cross-Platform ClientFor Macintosh and Linux users, Novell provides a cross-platform Java-based GroupWise client that offers near feature-parity with the Windows client. Please note that if you intend to use the cross-platform client from home, a high-speed broadband internet connection will be required. If you do not have a broadband internet connection, please use WebAccess (see above). Although no formal support is provided for either alternative, we recommend the GroupWise Cross-Platform Client over IMAP for accessing GroupWise from Mac or Linux based machines. For a comparison of Windows Client, WebAccess, and Cross-Platform client features, please look at Novell's documentation. Download the appropriate version of the cross-platform client from the links below. Please note that Computing and Network Services does not provide formal support for this client: When starting the GroupWise Cross-Platform client you will be prompted for the address and port of your GroupWise post office. Regardless of what Post Office your account resides on, you may enter the following address and port and the client will be automatically directed to the correct post office:
Outlook Connector for GroupWiseNovell provides an Outlook Connector for GroupWise that allows you to use MS Outlook as a client for GroupWise. Unlike IMAP access, the Connector provides full access to most GroupWise functionality, including your GroupWise Address Book and Calendar. For information on the feature sets available with the Outlook Connector vs. the standard Windows client, please see this page on the Novell web site. Please note: Drew University does not support Microsoft Outlook and Outlook is not supplied as part of our standard installation of Microsoft Office. This information is provided as a convenience for those customers who insist upon using Outlook only. Although no formal support is provided for either the Connector or IMAP access, we recommended using the Connector rather than IMAP if you must use Outlook as a client with GroupWise. The Outlook Connector for GroupWise may be downloaded here. The Connector will function on computers either with or without an existing GroupWise 7 Client installed. The Connector installation includes a subset of the GroupWise Client components necessary to connect to the GroupWise system but does not include the actual Windows client application. If a GroupWise Client is already installed, the Connector setup program will not install any new components, but will merely configure your Outlook profile to access the GroupWise system. When starting the Outlook client you will be prompted for the address and port of your GroupWise post office. Regardless of what Post Office your account resides on, you may enter the following address and port and the client will be automatically directed to the correct post office:
Note: If you intend to use automated rules to automatically file, forward, or respond to incoming mail (such as for vacation auto-reply), we recommend configuring these rules in the GroupWise Client, rather than Outlook. Outlook rules are processed by the Outlook client and thus only function so long as Outlook is running. GroupiWise rules, by contrast, are processed on the server and will function regardless of what method you use to access your mail. IMAP AccessYou may use IMAP mail clients, such as Mozilla Thunderbird or Outlook Express to access your GroupWise account. You will not be able to access the GroupWise calendar or advanced GroupWise features via IMAP.. Please note that IMAP access to GroupWise is provided on a "best-effort" basis only. The use of a standard GroupWise Client or WebAccess will be the only supported method for accessing GroupWise. We discourage the use of IMAP as your primary means of accessing GroupWise. Please use the following settings to access GroupWise via a standard IMAP mail client: (Note: Do not use these settings if you are using a Novell GroupWise Client. Instead, see this page for the correct Post Office address and port.)
Note: If you intend to use automated rules to automatically file, forward, or respond to incoming mail (such as for vacation auto-reply), we recommend configuring these rules in the GroupWise Client, rather than your IMAP mail client. Mail client rules are processed by the client and thus only function so long as your mail client is running. GroupiWise rules, by contrast, are processed on the server and will function regardless of what method you use to access your mail.
