SAN Migration Status

The following table lists services that rely on our main SAN (Storage Area Network) Disk Array, and their current status. Planned dates for migrations that are still pending will be added as they are scheduled. We will be adding to this list over time. Items in light green are completed. Items in yellow have been completed, or partially completed, but may have to be shut down again due to a dependency on another system that requires downtime.

Service

Planned Date

Notes/Impact
File/Print NetWare cluster (Causeway) Sunday, June 9, 9am There was about 20 minutes of downtime. All network drives (F:,G:,K:,M:,O:,P:,U:) were "mirrored" to the new disk array. We "broke" the mirrors Monday morning, and completed the last items Thursday, so the cluster is now relying exclusively on the new array for all services.
GroupWise NetWare cluster Monday, June 18, 5:05pm We were able to mirror and move volumes for some GroupWise services to the new array. Some post offices have been mirrored, but not completely switched over.
Network Load Balancer Friday, June 15, 6:30am This took slightly longer than expected - about 15 minutes. It was completed by 6:50am or so.
Web server (Legacy) Friday, June 15, 6:30am The virtual server was moved - users.drew.edu, depts.drew.edu and courses.drew.edu are all available again.
Library Catalog Saturday, June 16, 7am The virtual server and the catalog data volume were moved, as well as the virtual server that handles the web interface for the catalog.
Database Server Sunday, June 17, 7am We need to shut it down for an hour or two to move the data. This will interrupt: AdAstra, Breeze (Adobe Acrobat Communications Server), GroupWise Mobile, Informant 2000, Supportworks, Uniprint, as well as various web applications, including Community Forums.
Supportworks Friday, June 1st, 10pm This server handles the call tracking software we use in University Technology, and powers the support.drew.edu site. It's been moved. Supportworks will have to be shut down again when the database server (see Database Server, above) is shut down to migrate its data.
AdAstra Monday, June 4th, 11pm Server move completed. AdAstra will have to be shut down again when the database server (see Database Server, above) is shut down so migrate its data.
Uniprint See Database Server, above Does not need to be migrated itself, but when the database server is shut down so we can migrate its data, Uniprint will have to be shut down as well.
Adobe Acrobat Enterprise Connect / Macromedia Breeze Monday, June 4, 11:30pm This server depends on the Database Server (see above), and will have to be shut down one more time when we migrate the database server's data. The server itself has been moved.
Primary DNS / DHCP server Thursday, June 14, 6:15am We need to shut down and move the virtual server that handles much of our "name resolution" (lookups) for internet addresses (on and off campus) and hands out IP addresses (numeric) to computers on-campus. This should take about 10 minutes.
AIMS (Disney)

Wednesday, June 13, 6:15am

The virtual server was moved to the new array.
Blackboard Wednesday, June 13, 6:00am The virtual server was moved, the total system downtime was under 20 minutes.
PyraMED Tuesday, June 5, 10:45pm The virtual server was shut down during off hours and moved.
Web (Ektron) database server Thursday, June 7, 2pm A current copy of the back-end database for Ektron was loaded on another server, and the two web front end servers were pointed at it. The database server was then shut down, and we moved the virtual server configuration files over to the new disk array.
Web Application server Wednesday, June 12, 5:50am The server was shut down for about 10 minutes and is now on the new storage array.
Blackberry Enterprise server Monday, June 4th, 11:45 pm The virtual server's configuration files were moved to the new storage array. There was a brief (under 15 minutes) interruption in email delivery to Blackberry devices.
Software Licensing Server Monday, June 4, 10:45pm This server migration has been completed. This server handles licensing for SPSS, Mathmatica, and a variety of "keyed" (using Keyserver) applications.
VPN Authentication Server Monday, June 4, 10:30pm This server is used to handle authentication for the VPN to the Administrative computing system.
Raiser's Edge Friday, June 1st, 9:50pm This server should require no additional scheduled downtime.
