Required Computer Security Patch for Windows XP and Windows 2000

Microsoft has released a patch which addresses a serious security problem discovered in Windows XP and Windows 2000. This does not apply to systems running Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows 98SE or Windows ME.

Computing and Network Services considers this patch a requirement for any Windows 2000 or Windows XP system connected to Drew's network due to the potential seriousness of the vulnerability. Please help us protect the security of the campus network by being responsible for making sure this patch (KB828028) is installed on your computer. Computing and Network Services staff have already updated the various Windows servers
on campus.

The easiest way of installing the patch is simply to log onto the network using the Novell network client. When the Application Explorer loads, it should install the update if it is needed. Please reboot your computer if prompted to do so. Almost all Drew faculty and staff computers should be able to install the patch this way.

If, for any reason, you are using a computer (including non-Drew-issued systems which you connect to the Drew network) that does not log onto the network using the Novell client please go to the Microsoft Windows Updates web site by clicking on Start > Run > All Programs > Windows Updates. If you use this method, please install any critical updates you find listed, with the exception of Service Pack 4 for Windows 2000, which has not been tested on-campus. If you do not have a "Windows Update" icon on your start menu, you can open Internet Explorer and go to:

http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com

to get to the same site. Due to the number of people downloading updates from Microsoft, it may take some time to connect and download the updates directly from Microsoft.

If you have any questions about the update, please call x3205 or go to http://support.drew.edu and make a support request. Thank you for your cooperation.

Microsoft's technical information about the patch can be found at:
