The Kathryn D. Stanley Scholarship
The Kathryn D. Stanley Scholars Program was endowed in 1994 by family members and friends to honor the memory of Kathryn D. Stanley, a Drew French major. It is a scholarship to be awarded annually to a student or students of high merit, who are majoring or minoring in French, to enable a semester of study in France.
Kathryn D. Stanley was born July 24, 1970. She lived and was educated in Madison, New Jersey. During her short lifetime, she managed to overcome many obstacles and make an indelible impression on all she met. In her last years, she devoted herself to her love of life and especially her enthusiasm for all components of the French culture. She was majoring in French at Drew University where she showed a profound sense of the language. Never one to be complacent, Kathryn decided to improve her knowledge of French and spent a semester in Europe, mostly in France, in 1992. She had a broad curiosity for everything French: her interests ranged from art history to contemporary politics.
In spring 1993, she was awarded a special grant by the university for her efforts in organizing cultural events at the Drew Francophone House. During that semester, she treated her peers to Mardi Gras, a Tunisian soirée, a career evening and informal discussions about French cinema, politics, and the status of women in Francophone cultures.
Before she was killed on June 10, 1993, in an automobile accident, she had made plans to return to France in the fall of 1993 to study language and literature at the Université de Rennes.
Kathryn was an exceptional person—determined, giving, and overwhelmingly kind. She was always willing to help anyone, in any situation. She had the ability to find any French visitors in New Jersey and to guarantee them a loving and memorable stay.
It is hoped that this scholarship program will continue her spirit, help better the understanding of Americans in France, and make a warm welcome to French students who visit here.
