Armuth Tabbed National Coach of The YearDrew University men’s soccer coach Lenny Armuth was voted the National Coach of the Year by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. The award, voted on by division III coaches, was announced Friday night at the NSCAA convention and awards banquet in Charlotte, North Carolina. Armuth, who in November was named the NSCAA/Adidas Mid-Atlantic Regional Coach of the Year for the second consecutive season, was presented with his first-ever national award in front of 1,000 coaches and players.“I am humbled and honored to be given this award,” said Armuth. “It brings distinction and national recognition to our program. This simply caps off the tremendous year we had.” A tremendous year indeed. Armuth coached the Rangers to their first-ever NCAA championship game this season after posting 17 consecutive shutouts and 21 overall, breaking an NCAA all-division record. The 10-year veteran became Drew’s all-time winningest coach this season when he notched his 146th career victory on September 6 with a 1-0 overtime win against Manhattanville College, breaking the record of 145 set by former coach and director of athletics Vernon Mummert, who served as the Rangers’ head coach for 13 seasons. Currently Armuth boasts a career mark of 163-43-12 and ranks among the nation’s coaching leaders for winning percentage (.775) and career victories. In his 10 year reign at the helm of the Drew program, Armuth has guided the Rangers to six consecutive Freedom Conference titles, six straight NCAA Tournament appearances, and has been voted the conference Coach of the Year seven times. |
