Marquez Makes 1,000Sarah Marquez (Orono, ME) scored her 1,000 career point for the Drew University women’s basketball team Saturday, Feb. 5 in Baldwin Gym. The senior guard entered the 2004-05 season with 851 career points, needing 149 to enter Drew’s prestigious 1,000 point club. She registered the milestone with 5:05 remaining in a Freedom Conference matchup versus the University of Scranton which the Rangers ended up losing 72-63. Marquez has had an outstanding collegiate career, leading the Rangers in scoring her freshman and sophomore seasons with 15.2 and 14.0 points per game, respectively each year. Despite her freshman season being cut short due to a broken hand, Marquez experienced a spectacular rookie season. She was the team’s high scorer in eight of the 16 games she played and was named to the Freedom Conference Honor Roll twice during the season. The freshman phenom’s 39% shooting from three-point range would have broken the single-season record had she not narrowly missed the 75% games-played requirement. Marquez scored 243 points during her abbreviated season, and registered a career-high 31 points against Philadelphia Biblical University, setting the single-game record for three-point field goal attempts with 11. She returned in full-form her sophomore season to lead the Rangers to a 12-13 record, tying the program’s single-season win record. Marquez averaged a team-high 14.0 points per game, and also paced the squad in blocks (28), steals (42), and broke the single season records for three pointers (59) and three point attempts (155). She finished 6th in the conference in scoring, 2nd in three-point field goal percentage (.381) and 6th in blocks. With a focus on “student”, this student-athlete also earned a selection on the Middle Atlantic Conference All-Academic Team with a 3.79 cumulative GPA. Marquez averaged 9.9 points per game her junior year en-route to a record-breaking 16-10 season which saw the Rangers capture their first-ever ECAC Championship title. The three-year letter winner was tabbed the Most Valuable Player in Drew’s annual Rose City Classic tip-off tournament. And once again she earned a spot on the conference’s all-academic team, and was a nominee for the MAC Scholar-Athlete as well as a CoSIDA Academic All-District candidate. Needing only 149 points at the start of this season to reach the 1,000 point plateau, the senior guard suffered a serious ankle injury early on which sidelined her for five games. Marquez has played in 17 of the team’s 21 games, but has only started five contests this winter. That hasn’t slowed her passing ability however, as the co-captain has consistently ranked number one in the Freedom Conference with 4.0 assists per game. Currently she is averaging 8.9 ppg on .351 shooting, is .327 from three-point range, and leads the Rangers from the charity stripe shooting 80% from the free-throw line. Only six other players have reached 1,000 career points and on that prestigious list is current assistant coach Dana Tamuccio (C’91). |
