Professional Bio: Professor Messmer joined Drew's Political Science Department in 1979. He specializes in European and Latin American politics. After earning a B.A. from Otterbein College in 1963, he spent three years in the United States Army, then received an M.A. from Ohio University in 1969, and earned his Ph.D. from Ohio State University in 1976. He then taught for a year in Germany before coming to Drew. Professor Messmer has directed the Political Science Department's Semester in London from 1981-83, again in 1984, and in 1992, and served as Director of the United Nations Semester in 1980, 1986, and 1993. He has also taken Drew International Seminars to Mexico City and London/Brussels.
Professor Messmer has published in a wide range of journals, including: The Round Table (UK), Studies in Comparative International Development, and Foreign Policy. He also contributes periodically to the British Political Group Newsletter. His most recent article, "Taming Labour's MEPs", was published in 2003 in the journal Party Politics. |

Other Info: Bill Messmer's personal interests include sailing, fishing, and most things nautical. He has a house on the Maine coast (Southport Island, near Boothbay), and has owned a variety of boats, including a 32 foot Bristol sloop in which he has cruised the New England coast. At home in New Jersey, he has a garden that he enjoys working in, and has the reputation of making the best rhubarb pie in North Jersey. He is married to Catherine Messmer, the Director of Drew's Continuing University Education (CUE) Program, and they have two sons, Will and Matt. |
