Suggestions for Viewing the Book

This site is best viewed using a Netscape browser, version 3.0 or higher.

The many illustrations will be easier to see if you increase the size of your browser's viewing area. This can be done in Netscape by using the Options menu and turning off all the optional toolbars; they can easily be restored when you are done.

If you are using a slow modem you may wish the turn off the auto-loading of images. (In Netscape this is also part of the Options menu.) You will then see the full caption displayed in place of the illustration, and you can decide which of the images you wish to view (in Netscape the images are then loaded by using the View menu).

You will find simple navigation aids at the bottom of each page:

home returns you to the homepage
table of contents takes you to a page with hyperlinks to all the major sections of the book
index takes you to a page of indices (described below) with hyperlinks
back takes you to the preceding page of the book (this will not be the last page you viewed if you have not been reading the pages in order)
continue takes you to the next page of the book

The index is in three parts:

a general index to persons and topics, in which:
--page numbers are linked to references in the text
--selected names are linked to illustrations which accompany the text
an index to references to the United Methodist family of denominations
an index to references to Black Methodist denominations

There is also a Gallery of Photographs which provides links to all one hundred and twenty-eight illustrations in enhanced, JPEG (24 bit color) format, each on a separate page. This can be accessed from the Table of Contents, or by clicking on any of the illustrations in the book. The latter will automatically bring you to the entry you are seeking (it will be at the top of the screen unless you are at the very last screen of the page).
